Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of Great Britian, made the first official state visit to the Obama white house.
As is tradition, the Prime Minister selected some gifts to present to the President. Highly symbolic gifts that included an ornamental oak pen holder carved from timbers from the Victoian anti-slave ship, the HMS Gannet and a framed commission of the HMS Resolute, sister ship to the Gannet from which a desk was carved that has graced the Oval office since 1880. The symbolism and historic significance of these gifts is obvious. Celebrating the triumph of an African American being elected President and overcoming the horrors of the history of slavery, etc,etc.
Interesting gift, well thought out, heavy with import and meaning.

A collection of 25 DVDs of classic American films , including The Wizard of Oz, ET, and Star Wars.

The man, and the Nation, give you a gift hand carved from one of the most famous vessels in the world,that shaped the course of history, and you give him a crappy box of movies? Was this a left over Christmas present that they re-gifted? Or a calculated insult?
Not even a Netflix card so the Browns can send them back and get new ones when they are done watching these.
I wonder if they know that American DVD's most likely wont even play in England because of the regional codes built in to the players
Setting aside for the moment all the horrible domestic policies of bailout, phony stimulus, housing fraud bills etc etc etc, Obama had not to this point really done anything outside of the US. Foriegn Policy is my passion in as far as what the President really does, everything else he has done so far violates the Constituition anyway, but now he has in effect insulted,alienated and embarrassed our oldest and dearest ally and friend in the international community.
All through the campaign we were told that Hussein was by far the most intelligent man with the highest IQ that had ever run for President, so obviously he can't possibly be this stupid, can he???
That means this can only be a purposeful insult. Good job!
I have friends who are British citizens..I don't even want to speak to them now I am so embarrased to be an American today.
Every day the outlook for the USA gets darker and gloomier...and this angers me to no end..but it also saddens me greatly. The finest nation on earth is being systematically destroyed, not by a foriegn invader, but by the duly elected officials of its own government.
